The ICEPick – Steadfast

Rob Hogg unpacks August’s CIO Market Update, covering Powell’s dovish Jackson Hole tone, rising long-term bond yields, softer RBA cut prospects, and insights from reporting season.

In this latest version of ICE Investors, The ICEPick, we are pleased to announce a key ICE Fund holding, Steadfast Group (ASX: SDF) has received a takeover bid at a 52% premium to its 9 June closing price.

The recent May Investor Roadshow discussed the significant share price weakness in Steadfast Group in which we noted that in our view, the market’s concerns around AI disruption appeared overstated. This takeover bid highlights that when valuations disconnect so extremely from fundamentals, capital can mobilise and close that disconnection quickly.

Steadfast is not the only company in the Fund with an extreme disconnect between valuation and fundamentals. The majority of the Fund’s holdings are trading at or near 10-year valuation (P/E) lows, as illustrated in the chart below, with Steadfast highlighted in blue:

Please note: past performance is no guarantee of future results.

A market shift underway?

While it is too early to draw broader conclusions, this announcement raises an interesting question: could this be an early sign of a shift in market sentiment, with other high-quality businesses trading at historically depressed valuations beginning to attract renewed investor interest?

Many of these businesses share characteristics we find particularly attractive; sticky customer bases, resilient earnings, and hard-to-replicate assets – yet continue to trade at valuations well below long-term averages.

The ICE Fund is strongly positioned in this regard, with a number of portfolio holdings exhibiting these same qualities. If this announcement is a reminder of anything, it is that value can be realised quickly when market sentiment and business fundamentals begin to reconnect.
